For those of you in small business, linked in is truely a great tool for communication. In recent months , most of the Sunbelt Business Brokers worldwide have jumped on this system and are now sharing ideas, trends and global information. Florida Small Business News

At a recent seminar held in Tampa, Darren Mize of Gulfcoast Financial updated a group of business brokers on the state of deals taking place in Florida. The BBF or Business Brokers of Florida , Tampa Bay Chapter heard Darren speak on a variety of topics including evaluations, larger M& A deals and increasing lawsuits from buyers.

On the subject of evaluations, it was interesting to note that, in Darren's opinion, standard industry multiples, for mutiple of discretionary earnings, have not changed with the recession. This was encouraging to many of our Sellers, who thought the marketplace would adversely affect their sales prices.

Darren also stated that, as most of us know, good businesses are always selling, both in bad times and good.
He also discussed the upcoming meeting of the SBA Board in Washington, DC in August. At this meeting , the new Director will address increased funding, evaluation standards and the cap on Goodwill allocation.

For those Sellers, who may be on the fence about putting the business on the market, here is some great news! The last few weeks and months have seen dramatic steps taken by the SBA to promote 7A and 504 loans. The ceiling level for loans has been raised to $3million from $2million and most loan fees have been illiminated.

Additionally, lenders are seeing secondary markets move, allowing them to make more loans.

The best news is that buyers are quickly responding to new business listings. If your business is profitable and priced right, you should be able to attract a good buyer following. Part of this is the sheer drop in businesses on the market.

Talk to a Broker today about a free market evaluation, and consider seeling now that the markets are back in a positive position.

Sellers on the Fence

The economy is deterring some business owners from placing their company on the market. This, despite strong personal, family or health reasons. My suggestion to anyone in this case is to consult a broker and get a free market evaluation. At least you can obtain a value which may make the final decision to sell or not to sell. The other issue here is the mistaken notion( by most potential Sellers) that once the business is listed , it will close in 30-60 days. Nothing is further from the truth. The national average time to sell a business is between 8 and 9 months.

Having the business on the market, can bring buyers to the table, and allow you to choose the price and conditions of the sale. Using a Business broker will assure you of confidentiality while the process is taking place.

Interview with New SBA Chief

If you are not watching "Your Business"on MSNBC on Sundays, and you own a small company or business; you are certainly missing out. Last week, the host, J.J. Ramberg interviewed Karen Gordon Mills, the new head of the Small Business Administration. As part of the new stimulus package, the SBA has raised limits on loans from $2M to $3M and illiminated most origination fees. Additionally, Karen addressed the issue of government assistance to the secondary markets by stating that Tarp funds are now being injected into the larger banks, specifically for the purchase of SBA loans in the secondary marketplace.
